Aftercare

We use a product called Saniderm or Recovery on most of our tattoos. These products are a medical-grade, breathable, waterproof tattoo bandage that is engineered to be permeable to gasses, like oxygen. These bandages alleviate many of the pitfalls that come with other tattoo healing methods. They drastically reduce the risk of contaminants entering the wound site of a fresh tattoo and allows the body to keep itself moisturized. The result is a tattoo healing experience that is safer, smoother, and more efficient.

  1. It is best to change your Saniderm yourself after the first 24 hours. if you are uncomfortable doing so, you may Leave Saniderm for 4-5 days. (If we have used a standard bandage on you, leave it on for 3-4 hours and continue to step 4.)

  2. Showering while wearing Saniderm is fine, but it’s best to keep the time spent in the shower to a minimum. Water may weaken the adhesive of the bandage. Try to keep the bandage as clean and dry as possible until it’s time to remove it.

  3. To remove Saniderm, find an edge of the bandage and pull it back over itself in the direction of hair growth. The shower is the ideal place to remove Saniderm. Running water will help loosen the adhesive and relax the skin, making the removal much more comfortable. Dry removal of Saniderm may cause discomfort and added trauma to the skin.

  4. Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.

  5. Gently wash your tattoo under warm running water, using only your fingertips and mild unscented liquid soap. Keep washing it gently until any ointment, excess ink and dried blood are completely removed from the tattoo.

  6. Allow the tattoo to air-dry or pat clean with a paper towel

  7. Apply a *thin* layer of aftercare ointment or lotion.

  8. Continue to clean and moisturize your tattoo 2-3 times daily for the next three weeks or until the tattoo is not peeling, dry, or cracked. Deeper layers of skin will still be repairing for 2-4 months. We recommend a good moisturizing regimen for this entire period.

Healing

  • If the skin appears irritated, there is too much fluid buildup, or the bandage is coming off, it’s okay to remove the bandage sooner rather than later. Some fluid is normal, do not puncture, pop, or rupture the “ink sack.”

  • If there is adhesive residue leftover on the skin, or the adhesive is not loosening enough with water, coconut oil and baby oil are helpful for removal.

  • For pain and swelling, you can take ibuprofen and apply a cold compress for a few minutes in the first 3 days.

  • Once the bandage is off, for itching, you may use a few sprays of Bactine 2-3x day. Do not itch, pick, or slap at your tattoo.

  • No pools, hot tubs, saunas, or soaking in water for 3-4 weeks.

  • Do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight or tanning booths for at least three weeks.

  • After your tattoo is completely healed, use a 30 SPF (or greater) sunblock. Re-apply every few hours.
